A Landmark Collection Celebrating the Cinema of Akira Kurosawa

A long-awaited dream project for Kurosawa fans worldwide, this extraordinary book brings together original release-era posters from all 30 films directed by the legendary filmmaker, from his directorial debut Sanshiro Sugata (1943) to his final film, Madadayo (1993).

Made possible through the full cooperation of Kurosawa Production, Toho, and other organizations, this landmark collection captures the excitement and atmosphere surrounding Kurosawa’s films when their posters first appeared in theaters and on streets across Japan.

Featuring masterpieces such as Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, High and Low, and Red Beard, the book brings the visual history of these iconic films to life in a spectacular full-color B4-size edition.

Over 300 Rare Posters and Archival Images

With contributions from poster collectors in Japan and around the world, this volume showcases more than 300 visual items, including rare poster variations that have long been considered exceptionally difficult to find.

Highlights include the elusive first-release poster for Sanshiro Sugata, as well as large-format original theatrical posters for celebrated films such as Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro.

These remarkable materials offer a unique opportunity to explore the artistry and visual identity of Kurosawa’s films through the original posters created for their theatrical releases.

Rare Promotional Materials and Behind-the-Scenes Film History

Beyond the posters themselves, the book features valuable original promotional materials, including press sheets and lobby cards.

Period advertising copy and promotional text reveal how Kurosawa’s films were presented to audiences at the time, making this volume both a visually striking collection and a valuable historical reference for cinema enthusiasts and collectors.

Japanese-English Bilingual Edition with Five Bonus Posters

All text in the book, including commentary by Hisafumi Makita, a researcher specializing in Akira Kurosawa, is presented in both Japanese and English, making the collection accessible to Kurosawa fans around the world.

The book also includes five bonus B4-size posters selected from the collection:
