A reprint edition collecting the first 30 issues—where Shumi no Bungubako boldly explored the world of stationery as a passion.

At the launch of Shumi no Bungubako, the editorial team’s slogan was:
“Push forward with bold ideas and break into the unknown world of stationery!”

Now, looking back from the perspective of its 20th anniversary—when the magazine has grown into a mature publication for adults—it’s clear that those early issues were filled with an unmatched energy and daring spirit. You might even call it the recklessness of youth.

In the very first issue, we concentrated fountain pen ink by evaporating its moisture to intensify the color (and were later severely scolded by the manufacturer’s engineers), gathered famous notebooks to compare ink feathering under a 100x microscope, and even measured ink viscosity with professional equipment to scientifically analyze the smooth, “nura-nura” writing feel unique to fountain pens.

With nearly 200 years of history behind it, the fountain pen world has developed a deep and fascinating realm of vintage collecting. Shumi no Bungubako has continued to explore this highly specialized genre—surveying its landscape, uncovering the hidden appeal of classic models, and sometimes even disassembling them to create easy-to-understand timelines of how parts evolved over time.

This 30-volume collection is packed with detailed features on beloved vintage models, including the Montblanc Meisterstück and the Pelikan 100 Series.

When the original editorial members look back on these early issues together, one phrase always comes up:
“We were young back then.”

But those words also hold a deeper truth—that the more deeply you explore stationery, the more rewarding it becomes, and its fascination is truly limitless.

Even today, there is no other hobby magazine in the world quite like this one—dedicated entirely to the world of stationery. Within these first 30 volumes, you can feel the adventurous spirit of the editors, writers, and photographers who set out to create something entirely new.

The further time moves on, the more valuable the information in these pages becomes.
